OLD SECTION: |

1 |
Nancy
was a daughter of the Riffe Sutherlin who was buried in this cemetery, see
number 14. |
2 |
Mary Sutherlin was the wife of
William Sutherlin (Southerland) Sr.
William died about 1803 in Lincoln County, Kentucky. After that, Mary moved her family to
Indiana, first to Orange County, then to Putnam County. She is also the mother of Fendal Sutherlin |
3 |
Polly Hart was born Polly Ann
Lookabill. Not sure who her parents were. She was the wife of William Hart,
who is buried at the Hebron Cemetery.
William Hart was the son of John Hart and Martha McGaughey. Martha
McGaughey's parents were William and Prepare McGaughey who are buried at the
Blakesburg Cemetery. |
4 |
Franklin David Sutherlin was
married to Elsie Everman and they were divorced. Their children were Ollie, Wilbur and
Donald. I don't have dates on the
children, but Franklin and Elsie were married in 1905, so the children were
probably born in the 1905-1910 period. |
5 |
I
believe Thomas Sutherlin was a son of Thomas and Margaret (Britton)
Sutherlin. [Thomas (20), Fendal (18)] |
6 |
I
believe this Owen Sutherlin was a son of William and Anna Catherine (Saylor)
Sutherlin. [ William (buried in Maysville Missouri), Fendal (18)] |
7 |
Polly
Sutherlin was born Mary Polly Franklin about 1809. She was married to William
Sutherlin, Jr. who was a son of Mary Sutherlin, number 2, and a brother of
Fendal, number 18. Nobody knows when William Sutherlin Jr died or where he
was buried. |
8 |
Catherine Clodfelter was the
mother of Noah Clodfelter, stone 9 to the south of this stone. Nee Bowers,
I'm not sure who her parents were. Her husband was John Clodfelter, who was
supposed to have been buried on the Jesse Fordyce farm in Russell Township,
evidently a place where one of the first cemeteries in the township was
located. |
9 |
Noah
Clodfelter was the son of John and Catherine (Bowers) Clodfelter, stone
8. |
10 |
Sally Clodfelter was the wife
of Noah, number 9. Her maiden name was
Conley, but I have no information on her parents. |
11 |
Artemicia
Britton was a daughter of Thomas and Mary (Crawford) Sutherlin. She was also the wife of William Britton,
number 12, who is buried directly south of her. [Thomas (20), Fendal (18)] |
12 |
William
Britton was the husband of Artemicia (Sutherlin) Britton, number 11. |
13 |
Rebecca
Sutherlin was born Rebecca Saylor and was the wife of Riffe Sutherlin, number
14, who is buried directly south of her. |
14 |
Riffe
Sutherlin is a son of Fendal and Lydia
(Franklin) Sutherlin [Fendal(18)] |
15 |
Madison Sutherlin is also a son
of Fendal and Lydia (Franklin) Sutherlin and a brother of Owen, number
14. My information indicates he was
separated from (not sure if they divorced) his wife Rebecca (Spurgeon) Sutherlin. Rebecca was buried at the Little Walnut
Cemetery in Clinton Twp., Putnam Co. |
16a |
Piercy Sutherlin was a son of
Alfred and Amanda Ellen Sutherlin.
Alfred was a son of Owen & Mary Jane (Crady) Sutherlin and Amanda
Ellen was a daughter of Riffe & Rebecca (Saylor) Sutherlin. His wife
Verna (Lou Verna) is buried on the other side of this stone. |
16b |
Verna Sutherlin was the wife of
Piercy. She was born Aug 28, 1892 in Kentucky, the daughter of John and
Evaline (Hope) Waller. She died in in 1983 at Danville, Indiana, I believe in
a nursing home due to her age. She lived to be 90. |
17 |
Lydia (Franklin) Sutherlin was
the wife of Fendal Sutherlin, number 18.
It is believed that her grandfather John Franklin was a first cousin
to Benjamin Franklin. Yes the Benjamin
Franklin, signer of the Declaration of Independence, noted kite flyer, sayer
of wise things, etc. |
18 |
Fendal Sutherlin was the
husband of Lydia and a son of William
Sutherlin (Southerlin) Sr. He was also
a brother to my 5Gr Grandfather George W. Sutherlin. The following excerpt was taken from the
1879 Atlas of Putnam County, page 58.
The entry is about Riffe Sutherlin, number 14 above, but it indicates the
migration of his parents Fendal and Lydia. |
19 |
Mary
Sutherlin was, according to her stone, a wife of Thomas Sutherlin, stone 20. This is Thomas' first wife, Mary Crawford
Sutherlin. |
20 |
Thomas Sutherlin was a son
Fendal and Lydia (Franklin) Sutherlin.
The dates on his stone indicate he would have been born about January
25, 1807. He was married twice, first
to this Mary Crawford and then after Mary died, to Margaret Britton in 1842
[Fendal (18)] |
21 |
Margaret Sutherlin, wife of
Thos Sutherlin. The dates on her stone
indicate she was born about March 7, 1825.
My information indicates she was born Margaret Elizabeth Britton. Not
sure if she is related to William Britton, number 12. The ages seem to fit.
But boy is this complicated. William Britton’s wife was Artemicia Sutherlin,
daughter of Thomas Sutherlin though his first wife Mary Crawford. For
Margaret to be a daughter of William Britton, Artemicia would have had to be
William’s second wife, which is possible since he was about 40 years older
than she was. That would have meant
that Margaret’s stepmother Artemicia would have also been her stepdaughter by
virtue of Artemicia being a daughter of Thomas Sutherlin and his first wife
Mary Crawford. I don’t know, this
seems pretty far-fetched to me. |
22 |
Susan Sutherlin was a daughter
of Thomas & Margaret (Britton) Sutherlin.
[Thomas (20), Fendal (18)] |
23 |
William Sutherlin was a son of
William L and Artemesia (Sutherlin) Britton, stones 11 and 12. He is the grandson of Thomas and Mary
(Crawford) Sutherlin, and gr grandson of Fendal. [Artemisia (11),Thomas (20),
Fendal (18)] |
24 |
Richard
Sutherlin was I believe a son of John Walker and Amanda Ellen (Grimes)
Sutherlin. I can't read the dates on
the stone since it is buried in concrete, but other information I have
indicates he was born January 6, 1874 and died September 18, 1877. |
25 |
William
Sutherlin "son of Thos and M
Sutherlin." This is complicated
by the fact that the age is buried in concrete and that Thomas Sutherlin had
two wives, Mary and Margaret. My information indicates that Thomas and Mary
(Crawford) Sutherlin had a son named William who died August 8, 1857. This stone is a little hard to read. I have
marked the date of death to be 1852. If it is 1857, we have a match and
William’s parents are Thomas (number 20) and Mary (Crawford) Sutherlin, who
is apparently not buried here. [Thomas (20), Fendal (18)] |
26 |
Arthur
Sutherlin was I believe a son of John Walker and Amanda Ellen (Grimes)
Sutherlin. This would make him a brother of Richard, number 24. [John Walker
(28), Thomas (20), Fendal (18)] |
27 |
Amanda
E. Sutherlin was born Amanda Ellen Grimes and was the wife of John Walker
Sutherlin, number 28. |
28 |
John
Walker Sutherlin was a son of Thomas and Mary (Crawford) Sutherlin and the
husband of Amanda, number 27. [Thomas
(20), Fendal (18)] |
29 |
This
infant Sutherlin was a daughter of Thomas Witt and Mary (McCleary) Sutherlin
and grandaughter of John Walker and Amanda (Grimes) Sutherlin who are buried
just north of this stone, numbers 27 & 28. |
30 |
Older stone, can't read.
Probably a young child who died in the mid 1800's. |
31 |
Older stone, can't read.
Probably a young child who died in the mid 1800's. It looks like the initials "S. V.
M." are at the top of this stone.
This could be a McGill child, related to Eliza McGill, stone 34 and
David W. McGill, stone 35. |
32 |
Older stone, can't read.
Probably a young child who died in the mid 1800's. It looks like the initials "G.
G.." are at the top of this stone. |
33 |
Older stone, can't read.
Probably a young child who died in the mid 1800's. It looks like the initials
"O. V. M." or "J. V. M." are at the top of this
stone. This could be a McGill child,
related to Eliza McGill, stone 34 and David W. McGill, stone 35. |
34 |
Elizabeth Vorhees McGill was
probably a daughter of George & Catherine (Sutherlin) McGill. Catherine
(Sutherlin) McGill was a daughter of Riffe and Rebecca (Saylor) Sutherlin,
stones 13 & 14. |
35 |
David McGill was probably a son
of George & Catherine (Sutherlin) McGill. Catherine (Sutherlin) McGill
was a daughter of Riffe and Rebecca (Saylor) Sutherlin, stones 13 & 14. |
36 |
George A. Graham was the first
husband of Belle (McGill) Graham.
Belle was the daughter of George and Catherine (Sutherlin) McGill.
Catherine (Sutherlin) McGill was a daughter of Riffe and Rebecca (Saylor)
Sutherlin, stones 13 & 14. After
George died, Belle married George Adams. |
37 |
Milton
Britton was a son of William L. and Artemicia (Sutherlin) Britton, numbers 11
& 12. Artemica Britton was a
daughter of Thomas and Mary (Crawford) Sutherlin. [Artemica (11), Thomas (20), Fendal
(18)] |
38 |
An
epithet was crudely scratched into this stone which says, as best as I can
read: "Remember George R Calvin was borned the 11 day of Dec AD 1840 and
D on the 15 day of Dec 1842" |
39 |
Older stone, can't read.
Probably a young child who died in the mid 1800's. |
40 |
Older stone, can't read the
inscription but it says "Mother" on top. This was apparently
somebody's mother. |
41 |
Owen
Sutherlin was a son of Fendel and Lydia (Franklin) Sutherlin. It is interesting to note that his wife,
America (Crawford) Sutherlin, does not appear to be buried here, unless hers
is one of the older stones to the north or Owen's. The only information I
have on America is that she was born about 1818 and married Owen in Orange
County in 1834. The last of Owen and
America’s children was born about 1856, so she would have had to died after
that time. [Fendal (18)] |
42 |
William
Sutherlin was a son of Owen and American Sutherlin. [Owen (41), Fendal
(18)] |
43 |
Mary Dulcema Clodfelter. Her
stone says she is the wife of J. T. Clodfelter (I'm pretty sure this is
Jackson T.). Jackson T. Clodfelter
was buried at the Union Chapel Cemetery, west of Morton. Jackson Taylor Clodfelter's parents were
Solomon and Matilda (Hinkle) Clodfelter who are also buried at the Union
Chapel Cemetery. |
44 |
Eliza or Elizabeth, wife of
Geo. W. House. I have no idea who this
is. I would have thought I would have
found a George House marrying an Elizabeth Sutherlin or something like that
in the marriage records, but so far I have not found such a match. |
45 |
So far I have not been able to
identify a Harvey W. Sutherlin. I have
found a son of about the proper age in the 1880 census under Elijah
Sutherlin, who is buried just to the west of this stone. The first time through I noted that the
child's name was very hard to read. I need to look at this census again to
see if it is in fact Harvey. |
46 |
Nancy Sutherlin was the first
wife of Thomas Sutherlin, number 47.
Nancy was born Nancy Hinkle (or Henkel), the daughter of Lott and
Rosanna (Garth) Hinkle. Nancy and Thomas had four children. Nancy's parents
are buried at the Blakesburg Cemetery. |
47 |
Thomas
Sutherlin was a son of Riffe and Rebecca (Saylor) Sutherlin, who are buried
in the farthest west row of this cemetery.
After his first wife Nancy (Hinkle) Sutherlin died in 1879, Thomas
married Sarah Hargrave in 1880 and they had at least one child. I don’t
believe that Sarah, the second wife of Thomas Sutherlin, is buried in this
cemetery. If she is buried here, it
would have to be one of the older stones I can’t read. [Riffe (14), Fendal
(18)] |
48 |
Luly Webster was the daughter
of William and Mary Jane (Clodfelter) Webster. Mary Jane's parents were Solomon and
Matilda (Hinkle) Clodfelter. Matilda (Hinkle) Clodfelter was a sister to
Nancy (Hinkle) Sutherlin, stone 46. |
49 |
Ida
Clodfelter was the daughter of Marion Francis and Martha (Grimes) Clodfelter,
who are buried at the Hebron Cemetery which is a couple of miles north of the
Sutherlin Cemetery. Ida'a grandparents were Noah and Sally Clodfelter, stones
9 and 10. |
50 |
Elijah
Sutherlin was a son of Riffe and Rebecca (Saylor) Sutherlin. His name was Elijah Crawford Sutherlin and
I have researched this line extensively and have a lot of information on his
descendants, a good many of whom are buried in this cemetery. |
51 |
Elizabeth
(Triplett) Sutherlin was the wife of Elijah Sutherlin, number 50. |
52 |
James
Albert "Grit" Sutherlin was a son of Thomas Sutherlin Jr and Mary (Bingham)
Sutherlin. I believe Thomas is number
5 and is buried in the far northwest corner of the cemetery. [Thomas (5),
Thomas (20), Fendal (18)] |
53 |
William
David "Bill Gavey" Sutherlin was also a son of Thomas Sutherlin and
Mary( Bingham) Sutherlin. Note that
James and William both lived a long time, but neither married. [Thomas (5),
Thomas (20), Fendal (18)] |
54 |
Infants
Sutherlin - children of W. M. & M. Based on the dates and location of
stones, I believe these were children of William Milford and Mary (Roach)
Sutherlin. W. Milford Sutherlin is
buried at the south end of this row. [William Milford (58), Thomas |
55 |
Ella
Sutherlin was also a daughter of William Milford and Mary (Roach) Sutherlin.
[William Milford (58), Thomas (47), Riffe (14), Fendal (18)] |
56 |
Earl
Sutherlin was also a son of William Milford and Mary (Roach) Sutherlin.
[William Milford (58), Thomas (47), Riffe (14), Fendal (18)] |
57 |
William Milford Sutherlin was a
son of Thomas and Nancy (Hinkle) Sutherlin, numbers 46 & 47. It is interesting to note that he had five
children, three of which died young and are buried to his north. I don't know where his wife Mary (Roach)
Sutherlin is buried. |
58 |
Oscar McGaughey was a son of Pleasant and Samantha (Hart) McGaughey, who are buried at the Blakesburg
Cemetery. |
|

Lawrence Earl Sutherlin was a
son of Lawrence A. 13, 14 and 15 are all on one stone. The information I have indicates that
Lawrence Earl Sutherlin's mother was Phyllis Shaw and they married April 9,
1949. Either my information is not
correct, or Joanne is Lawrence A’s second wife. I’m sure my information is wrong based on
the dates. [Lawrence Alexander (14N),

this stone, see number 14N. Courtney
Glenn and Eileen were divorced and he married Ethel in 1935. They had three children: Jackie Neal
